Otter Bunkhouse is located in the village of Carishader, in Uig, in the southwest of the Isle of Lewis.  To get here...

BY AIR:

Loganair operates daily flights to Stornoway from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.

BY FERRY:

Ferries are operated by Caledonian MacBrayne.  In summer months it's a good idea to book your car in advance, but there's no need to book as a foot passenger.

There is a bus from Inverness to Ullapool, which connects with the ferry to Stornoway, or if you are coming via Harris, there is a ferry from Skye to Tarbert on Harris.  From Stornoway to Uig is about a 45 minute drive, and from Tarbert, it's around an hour.

DRIVING FROM STORNOWAY/TARBERT:

  • Take the A859 from Stornoway towards Tarbert (or vice versa from Tarbert to Stornoway).

  • When you reach Leurbost turn right on the A858 towards Garynahine.

  • At Garynahine turn left onto the B8011 towards Uig and Bernera and follow this road for about 18 miles until you reach the village of Carishader.

  • When you reach Carishader, drive through the village, and just after the 'Art Shed', you will see a sign for Otter Bunkhouse on the righthand side.  The access turning to the bunkhouse is awkward due to the location, so please take care.  You may find it easier to drive a hundred yards up the road to a turning point at the sheep pen.  Parking is available right beside the bunkhouse.

BUSES:

From Stornoway to Uig, you can take the W4 bus.  All of the buses to Uig leave from Stornoway Bus Station, and take around 40 to 50 minutes.

  • There is a direct service Monday to Saturday at 12pm.  There is also a service on Monday to Saturdays at 6pm, but you will need to change at Garynahine.

  • There is also a direct school bus service from Monday to Thursday at 3.45pm, and on Fridays at 1.55pm and 4pm.  In school holidays, these buses are replaced by a service at 2.30pm, but you will need to change at Garynahine.

  • There is an additional service on Saturday at 3pm, but you need to change at Garynahine.

For buses that change at Garynahine, just let the bus driver know you are coming to Carishader, and they will drop you in the right place for your connection.  Let the bus driver know you are coming to Otter Bunkhouse in Carishader, and they will drop you at the door.
